Yeah, it's available to the masses now, but from 2004 to 2007, it was invite only. So what was the requisite criteria to garner a Gmail invite? Who made the call? Thanks for your insight.
How did GMail decide who was going to get invitations?
I have been told that Gmail had been available to google employees since January of 2004. Employees just had to sign up for it. In april 2004 google introduced the 'invites' system and the employees who had signed up for Gmail started sending out invites to their friends. It started with 5 invites each eventually growing up to 100 invites (even 500 invites in some cases) leading up to becoming accessible to everyone. All in all, I dont think Google executives had to make any calls about whom to invite. It was a typical organic internet phenomenon.
